SILENT THUNDER to poboczny projekt M., osoby odpowiedzialnej za Lamp of Murmuur - a tego z kolei przedstawiać nie ma potrzeby. Jest to pierwsze demo. Z informacji jakie można znaleźć okazuje się, że te dwa utwory są w pełni improwizowane. Mocno zaintrygowany tymże, przesłuchałem materiał wielokrotnie i pozostaje mi wyczekiwać kasety. Poniżej kilka spostrzeżeń z odsłuchu.
Tak jak w przypadku Lamp of Murmuur można śmiało mówić o surowym Black Metalu, tak M. pod szyldem SILENT THUNDER stworzył coś zgoła odmiennego. Sporo tu nacisku na atmosferę, a drugi utwór będący wypadkową Ambientu i Dungeon Synth, pozwala przypuszczać w jakim kierunku mogą kolejne nagrania tego projektu pójść. Pierwszy utwór "Forgotten Celebrations from the Saturnian Throat" to pełen podniosłej aury Black Metal ziejący mrokiem czeluści katakumb. I trzeba przyznać, że jeśli to faktycznie jest improwizowany utwór, to albo mamy tu do czynienia z geniuszem albo po prostu się zajebiście udało. Mając jednak na uwadze wysoki poziom tego, co reprezentuje sobą muzyka Lamp of Murmuur, skłaniam się ku geniuszowi twórcy tych dźwięków. Utwór jest cholernie impulsywny, dziki, ale przez wplecione partie klawiszy nieco uładzony, okiełznany. Niesamowitego klimatu nadają również gardłowe wokale, bardziej szorstkie, jakby desperackie, niemal wykrzyczane i zaryzykuje stwierdzenie, że odbiegające od Black Metalowych standardów. I pomimo surowego brzmienia demo jest niesamowicie czytelne i na wskroś przesiąknięte ciemnością. Drugi utwór to inna opowieść. Owszem, zarówno jak fan Ambientu i Dungeon Synth lubię takie dźwięki, ale jakoś odniosłem wrażenie, że ten utwór po prostu tylko ok. I nie zrozumcie mnie źle, "Usurper - Halls of Splendour - The Triumphant Winter - Usurper's Delight" pod względem nawet improwizowanej aranżacji trzyma się kupy. W jakimś sensie nie mogę rozgryźć w którym kierunku ten utwór miał pójść, a kłócące się czasem kakofoniczne dźwięki nie pomogły w tym nic a nic. Jest tu trochę naleciałości starego Mortiis'a czy pasaże zbliżone do Elffor bądź Thangorodrim, ale być może z tytułu owej improwizacji wyszło to nieco chaotycznie? Przejścia między poszczególnymi motywami utworu (co jak mniemam ma sugerować tytuł podzielony na części) są jakby przypadkowe i trochę zakłóca to odbiór utworu. Jednakże, jest to dalekie od tragedii czy porażki. A być może po prostu ja nie do końca poczułem tą muzykę.
Podsumowując, "Usurping the Hall of Might and Splendour" to dwa rozdziały opowiedziane zupełnie innymi formami muzycznymi, które mimo wszystko się w wielu przypadkach uzupełniają. Tak też jest i w przypadku pierwszego dema SILENT THUNDER. Z tą jednak różnicą, że utwór wykonany wyłącznie na syntezatorze nie trzyma aż tak wysokiego poziomu jak otwierający "Forgotten Celebrations from the Saturnian Throat". Koniec końców i tak nabędę tą kasetę i kto wie - może w pełni trafi do mnie z fizycznego nośnika? Mam taką nadzieję.

SILENT THUNDER is a side project of M., the person responsible for Lamp of Murmuur - and this one needs no introduction. This is the first demo. From the information that can be found it turns out that these two tracks are fully improvised. Strongly intrigued by it, I've listened to the material many times and I can't wait for the cassette. Below are some observations from listening.
Just as in the case of Lamp of Murmuur you can safely talk about raw Black Metal, while M. under the name of SILENT THUNDER created something quite different. There's a lot of emphasis on the atmosphere, and the second track being a resultant of Ambient and Dungeon Synth, allows us to assume in what direction the next recordings of this project may go. The first track "Forgotten Celebrations from the Saturnian Throat" is a Black Metal full of solemn aura, breathing darkness from the depths of catacombs. And you have to admit, if this is indeed an improvised track, then either we're dealing with genius here or it just got awesome. However, given the high level of what Lamp of Murmuur's music represents, I lean towards the genius of the creator of these sounds. The track is damn impulsive, wild, but through the keyboard parts woven in, a bit smoothed out, tamed. Incredible atmosphere is also given by the throaty vocals, rougher, more desperate, almost outshouted and I would risk to say deviating from the Black Metal standards. And despite the harsh sound, the demo is incredibly clear and thoroughly soaked in darkness. The second track is a different story. Yes, as a fan of Ambient and Dungeon Synth I like such sounds, but somehow I got the impression that this track is just ok. And don't get me wrong, "Usurper - Halls of Splendour - The Triumphant Winter - Usurper's Delight" holds its own even in terms of improvised arrangement. Somehow I can't figure out which direction this song was supposed to go in, and the sometimes arguing cacophonous sounds didn't help matters any. There are some traces of old Mortiis or passages similar to Elffor or Thangorodrim, but maybe it was a bit chaotic due to the title of this improvisation? The transitions between the individual themes of the piece (which I guess are supposed to be suggested by the title, divided into parts) are kind of accidental and it disturbs the reception of the piece a bit. However, it is far from a tragedy or a failure. Or maybe I just didn't quite feel the music.
To sum up, "Usurping the Hall of Might and Splendour" is two chapters told with completely different musical forms, which nevertheless complement each other in many cases. This is also the case with the first SILENT THUNDER demo. The only difference is that the track made only on synthesizer doesn't keep as high level as the opening one, "Forgotten Celebrations from the Saturnian Throat". At the end of the day I will still buy this cassette and who knows - maybe it will fully reach me from the physical medium? I hope so.
