DARKENED to zespół złożony z muzyków, którzy są znani ze swoich udziałów w innych zespołach. W skład wchodzą tacy ludzie jak chociażby oryginalny perkusista Bolt Thrower - Andrew Whale, basista Grave, Entombed A.D. - Tobias Cristiansson, który udzielał się też przez sporo lat w Dismember oraz gitarzysta A Carnous Quintet - Linus Pettersson. Nie wiem jak się ma taka plejada osobowości znanych już nieco poza undergroundem względem każdego z was, ale szczerze mówiąc - na mnie nie robi to wrażenia, bo najważniejsza jest muzyka. Tak więc skupimy się na niej. Dodam jeszcze tylko, iż DARKENED powstało w 2018 roku i przed nagraniem omawianego albumu, wydali jeszcze debiutancką EPkę.
Przyznam na początku, że musiałem kilka razy przebrnąć przez ten materiał zanim przyswoiłem go sobie w pełni. Żeby uniknąć nieporozumień od razu wyjaśniam - Death Metal grany przez DARKENED nie jest żadnym technicznym dziwadłem bądź progresywną papką. Nic z tych rzeczy! Jednakże zestawienie muzycznych aranżacji Bolt Thrower wyjętych z okolic "The IVth Crusade" i zestawionych z szwedzką szkołą grania trochę mi namieszało. Początkowo ta melodyka, momentami nawet dość lekka, kłóciła mi się z ciężarem wolniejszych partii, ale okazało się, że trzeba się przyzwyczaić i nawet sprawnie to wchodzi. Osobiście dużym mankamentem dla mnie były triggery na perkusji i ten zabieg nieco spłycił brzmienie. Do samego sposobu gry Andrew nie można się przyczepić nawet w najmniejszym stopniu, bo odwalił zajebistą robotę, ale finalne brzmienie tego instrumentu mi po prostu nie odpowiada. Gitary są w głównej mierze oparte na riffach tremolo, nie z rzadka dodany jest efekt tłumienia strun i jest świetnie. Dochodzą do tego również solówki i gitary prowadzące, które trzeba przyznać, są naprawdę bardzo dobre. Sporadycznie pojawiają się też klawisze w tle dla podkreślenia atmosfery. Po przesłuchaniu "Kingdom of Decay" kilka razy można zauważyć swego rodzaju regułę - wolne riffy tremolo wchodzą w kontrast podwójnej stopy Andrew i rozwijają się w szysze obroty charakterystyczne już dla Szwedzkiego Death Metalu. Oczywiście to mocno uproszczony opis. Wokale są tu dość charakterystyczne, growle środka - nieprzesadzone, nieprzekombinowane i niezaskakujące. Tyle, że ta formuła się sprawdziła i dobrze to współgra z muzyką.
DARKENED nagrał całkiem solidny album. Jednakże, nie wiem czy w zalewie ilości albumów Death Metalowych, jest w stanie zwrócić na siebie należną uwagę. Czas pokaże, a wy sięgajcie po "Kingdom of Decay", bo to dobry album.

DARKENED is a band made up of musicians who are known for their shares in other bands. It consists of such people as the original Bolt Thrower drummer - Andrew Whale, Grave & Entombed A.D. bassist, - Tobias Cristiansson, who has also been active in Dismember for many years and A Carnous Quintet guitarist Linus Pettersson. I don't know how about you to have such a plethora of personalities already known a little bit outside the underground in relation to each of you, but frankly it doesn't impress me that much, because the most important thing is music. So we will focus on it. Let me just add that DARKENED was founded in 2018 and before recording this album, they released their debut EP.
I must admit at the beginning that I had to go through this material several times before I fully assimilated it. To avoid any misunderstandings, I explain straight away - Death Metal played by DARKENED is not a technical oddball or progressive slurry. None of this! However, the combination of Bolt Thrower's musical arrangements taken out of the area of "The IVth Crusade" and collated with the Swedish school of playing I got a little confused. Initially, this melodics, sometimes even quite light, was arguing with the weight of the slower parts, but it turned out that you have to get used to it and it even goes well. Personally, a big disadvantage for me were triggers on the drums and this trick made the sound a bit shallow. You can't get attached to the way Andrew plays, even in the slightest, because he did an awesome job, but the final sound of this instrument simply doesn't suit me. The guitars are mainly based on tremolo riffs, not infrequently added string suppression and it is great. There are also solos and lead guitars, which you have to admit, are really very good. Occasionally there are also keys in the background to emphasize the atmosphere. After hearing the "Kingdom of Decay" several times you can see a kind of principle - slow tremolo riffs enter into the contrast of Andrew's double foot and develop into the higher speed revolutions already characteristic of Swedish Death Metal. Of course this is a very simplified description. Vocals are quite characteristic here, middle growls - not overdone, conventional and not surprising. Only that this formula has worked out well and it fits well with the music.
DARKENED has recorded quite a solid album. However, I don't know if, in a flood of Death Metal albums, it is able to draw the right attention to itself. Time will tell, and you reach for "Kingdom of Decay", because it is a good album.
