Ostatnimi czasy Old Temple wzięło się ostro za wznowienia płyt, które zasłynęły na metalowej scenie. Otwierając paczkę z materiałami z wspomnianej wytwórni, od razu wpadł mi w oko album HOLY DEATH, na który z resztą rzuciłem się jak głodny zombie na żywy ochłap mięsa. Co do tego krakowskiego zespołu, to jak dla mnie totalnym kultem jest album Triumph of Evil, do którego wracam bardzo często. W sumie w całej ich dyskografii znajdziemy trzy albumy, kilka dem, splitów i kompilacje. HOLY DEATH w latach 1989 - 1993 funkcjonował pod nazwa GLADIATOR, by jeszcze tego samego roku przyjąć obecna nazwę. W ciągu tych wszystkich lat obecności na scenie, przez zespól przewinęło się wielu muzyków. By juz nie przedłużać tego wstępu, zapraszam do poniższej recenzji.
Mówiąc o pełniaku The Knight, Death and the Devil wydanym przez Old Temple, trzeba zaznaczyć, że nie będzie to krótkie wydawnictwo, składa się ono bowiem z dwóch płyt. Na pierwszej z nich zmieściło się osiemnaście utworów, a na drugiej czternaście, natomiast czas trwania całego materiału wynosi prawie dwie godziny i piętnaście minut. Pomimo tak długiego czasu odtwarzania, muzyka przygotowana przez HOLY DEATH wchodzi dobrze, i nawet nie czuć tych upływających dwóch godzin. Mówiąc szczerze, może nie jest to lepszy materiał niż mój ulubiony ich album - Triumph of Evil, ale nie jest też zły. Ma po prostu lepsze i gorsze kawałki, jedne przyswajają się od razu, a drugie trzeba przesłuchać kilka razy, by wpadły w ucho. Przy okazji wspomnę, że dużym zaskoczeniem dla mnie był dwunasty utwór na drugim dysku (Standing Under the Cross (mix)) wzbogacony o sample i sporą dawkę elektroniki, wraz z przerobionym w jakimś efekcie wokalem. Z pewnością taka muzyka dobrze byłaby odebrana w klubie, ale na pewno jest ciężko strawna dla ortodoksów otwartych głównie na klasyczne brzmienie. Ja odebrałem to jako eksperyment, bo muzyka po to jest aby trochę z nią poeksperymentować. Na szczęście zespół nie zmienił stylu muzycznego. Mamy tu sporo riffów gitar charakterystycznych dla przełomu lat osiemdziesiątych i dziewięćdziesiątych. Pojawia się trochę sekcji tremolo, co jest nowością, spoglądając na poprzedni album. Jednakże, wciąż dominuje sekcja rytmiczna, która jest bogata w thrash metalowe brzmienia, co sprawia, że dynamika muzyki jest na bardzo dobrym poziomie. Bas jest niski i ciężki. Miażdży czaszki swoim ciężarem i czuć go w bebechach, jakby ktoś wbił w nie dłoń i próbował wyrwać wszystkie organy. Jest tu też trochę klawiszy, budujących świetny klimat. Wokal wprowadza dużo mroku, dzięki chropowatej i niskiej barwie. Jednak nie zawsze brzmi w tak ciężkim wykonaniu. Pojawia sie w czystym brzmieniu i również w formie mówionej. Tempa jakie pojawiają się na tym krążku, oscylują wokół średnich. W tym materiale oprócz autorskich numerów znajdziecie kilka coverów, w tym BATHRORY, TSA, SABBAT i kilku innych. Podsumowując tę płytę, trzeba przyznać, że nawet na czasy obecne jest to na prawdę mocna rzecz, która potrafi przyciągnąć do siebie wielu maniaków. Zdecydowanie zachęcam do zakupu tego podwójnego krążka.

Recently Old Temple has taken to reissues of albums that became famous on metal scene. Opening a package with the materials from the mentioned label, I immediately caught an eye of the HOLY DEATH album, to which I threw myself like a hungry zombie on a live scrap of meat. As for this band from Cracow, the album Triumph of Evil is a total cult for me, to which I return very often. In total in their whole discography you can find three albums, a few demos, splits and compilations. HOLY DEATH functioned under the name GLADIATOR between 1989 and 1993, only to adopt their current name the same year. During all these years of presence on stage, many musicians went through the band. In order not to prolong this introduction, I invite you to the following review.
Talking about the full-length The Knight, Death and the Devil released by Old Temple, it must be noted that it won't be a short release, as it consists of two discs. The first one contains eighteen tracks, the second - fourteen, and the duration of the whole is almost two hours and fifteen minutes. Despite such a long playing time, the music prepared by HOLY DEATH flows well and you don't even feel those two hours passing by. To be honest, it may not be better than my favorite album of theirs - Triumph of Evil, but it's not bad either. It just has better and worse songs, some of them are instantly absorbing, while the others you have to listen to a few times to get the hang of. By the way, the twelfth track on the second disc (Standing Under the Cross (mix)), enriched with samples and a large dose of electronics, along with reworked vocals to some effect, was a big surprise to me. Certainly, such music would be well received in a club, but it is certainly hard to digest for orthodox listeners open mainly to the classic sound. I perceived it as an experiment, because music is there to be experimented with. Fortunately, the band didn't change their musical style. We have here a lot of guitar riffs characteristic for the turn of the eighties and nineties. A bit of tremolo section appears, which is a novelty, looking back at the previous album. However, the rhythm section still dominates and is rich in thrash metal sounds, which makes the dynamics of the music at a very good level. The bass is low and heavy. It crushes skulls with its weight and you can feel it in your guts, as if someone stuck their hand in it and tried to rip out all the organs. There are also some keyboards here, building a great atmosphere. Vocals introduce a lot of darkness, thanks to their harsh and low tone. However, it does not always sound so heavy. It appears in clean version and also in spoken form. Tempos that appear on this album oscillate around the medium ones. In this material, apart from original songs, you will find a few covers, including BATHRORY, TSA, SABBAT and some others. To sum up this album, you have to admit that it is, even for the present times, a really strong thing, which can attract many maniacs. I definitely encourage you to buy this double disc.
