Doskonale pamiętam czasy, gdy dość często wpadały mi w ręce płyty nagrywane w domowych warunkach na popularnym formacie CD-r. Dzięki temu na metalowym podwórku znało się wiele początkujących kapel. Dzisiaj już tak często takie nagrania nie trafiają do mojej kolekcji, ale jednak czasami się zdarza. Taka właśnie płyta trafiła dziś do mojego odtwarzacza, a jest to demo fińskiego ANCIENT OBSCURITY wydanego własnymi siłami w 2013 roku, by rok później pod swoje skrzydła wzięła to dzieło Cold Raw Records. Ten black metalowy projekt dorobił się siedmiu wydawnictw, a co ciekawe, jedna z nich ukazało się dzięki wrocławskiej wytwórni Wolfspell Records. Od 2018 roku w ANCIENT OBSCURITY nastała wydawnicza cisza, być może oznacza to ciszę przed burzą i najbliższym czasie ów projekt zaskoczy nowym materiałem.
Forn Vándr to drugie demo w dorobku ANCIENT OBSCURITY. Niezbyt to długi materiał; zawiera cztery utwory, które wybrzmiewają mroczne melodie ku chwale Rogatego przez niecałe dwadzieścia minut. Muzyka jaka wylewa się z głośników, to surowy, piwniczny black metal z wpływami doom metalowymi. Chociaż pierwsze dźwięki jakie docierają do uszu potrafią zaskoczyć dynamiką i dość szybkim tempem, to w innych utworach równie ciekawie brzmią zwolnienia, które przybierają na wadze i miażdżą swym ciężarem oraz pogrążają w mroku. W gitarowych partiach znajdziemy riffy tremolo i rytmiczne, które doskonale oddają zimowy klimat, dając zimne, brzmienie. Perkusja bardzo wyraźna, wypełnia każdą szczelinę dźwięku, słucha się tego instrumentu z niezaprzeczalną przyjemnością, która sprawia, że stopa sama tupie w rytm wybijany w bębny. Wokal jest gardłowym skrzekiem o bardzo niskiej tonacji, wyraźnie chropowaty. Chociaż jest on surowy, to jednak słychać w nim pewną tendencję do melodyjności, co sprawia, że cała muzyka zapada w pamięć. Chociaż to demo nie jest jakoś bardzo starym materiałem to uderza fakt, że muzycznie bardzo mocno nawiązuje do lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Może dzięki temu nie zaskakuje, bo wszystko to jest już znane. Jednak jak dla mnie nie jest to minus, a nawet przeciwnie. Lubię wracać do takiej muzyki lubię gdy jeszcze ktoś taką nagrywa, nie ulegając cukierkowej produkcji dla hipsterskiej społeczności. Ten krążek jest dla mnie materiałem, do którego z pewnością będę wracał. Może nie jest to dzieło wybitne, ale warto go posłuchać, na pewno nie znudzi się szybko, o ile lubicie klimaty surowego black / doom metalu.

I remember very well the times when I quite often got my hands on records recorded at home on the popular CD-r format. Thanks to that, there were many beginner bands on the metal scene. Nowadays such recordings don't find their way into my collection as often as they used to, but it still happens sometimes. Such a record has found its way to my player today, and it is a demo of Finnish ANCIENT OBSCURITY released on their own in 2013, only to be taken under their wings a year later by Cold Raw Records. This black metal project has earned seven releases, and interestingly enough, one of them came out thanks to Wrocław-based Wolfspell Records. Since 2018 ANCIENT OBSCURITY has had a publishing silence, maybe it means the silence before the storm and this project will surprise with new material in the nearest future.
Forn Vándr is the second demo in ANCIENT OBSCURITY's output.It's not a very long material; it contains four tracks that resound with dark melodies to the glory of the Horned One for less than twenty minutes. The music that pours out of the speakers is raw, basement black metal with doom metal influences. Although the first sounds that reach your ears can surprise you with dynamics and quite a fast pace, in other tracks equally interesting are slowdowns, which gain in weight and crush with their heaviness and plunge into darkness. In the guitar parts we can find tremolo and rhythmic riffs, which perfectly reflect the winter climate, giving a cold, sound. Percussion is very clear, fills every crevice of the sound, you listen to this instrument with undeniable pleasure, which makes your foot stomping to the rhythm beaten in the drums. The vocal is a throaty screech with very low tonality, clearly harsh. Although it is raw, you can hear a certain tendency towards melody in it, which makes all the music memorable. Despite the fact that this demo is not a very old material, it is striking that musically it refers very strongly to the nineties. Maybe that's why it doesn't surprise, because everything is already known. However, for me it is not a minus, on the contrary. I like to come back to such music, I like it when someone else records it, without succumbing to candy production for the hipster community. This album is for me the material to which I will certainly return. Maybe it's not an outstanding work, but it's worth listening to, for sure it won't get boring quickly if you like raw black / doom metal.
