Do mojego odtwarzacza wpadło właśnie najnowsze wydawnictwo BAALBERITH. Zespół ten to już starzy wyjadacze w wykuwaniu black metalu, powstał on bowiem w 1999 roku pod nazwą BLACK DEATH i z tego, co mi wiadomo nagrał w 2000 roku demo, które ostatecznie nie zostało wydane. Aktualna nazwa kapeli figuruje od 2006 roku i od tej pory ekipa z Nottingham / Newark Lincoln dorobiła się dość potężnej dyskografii. Znajdziemy wśród tych wydawnictw cztery albumy, kilka demówek, splitów, ep i jedną kompilację. Tak więc jest w czym przebierać. W składzie znajduje się czterech muzyków, a z tego, co widzę, to tylko Razakel pochodzi z oryginalnego składu. Reszta artystów została zwerbowana w 2020 roku. Posłuchajmy zatem ich najnowszej ep.
Beyond the Grave rozpoczyna się dość delikatnym i melodyjnym wstępem klawiszowym, by następnie po krótkiej chwili przyjebać ciężarem gitar. Muzyka, która została wykreowana przez BAALBERITH to zaskakujące połączenie black metalu, z melodyjnym death metalem, a całość okraszona jest dźwiękami z syntezatorów. Przyznam się bez bicia, że osobiście jakoś ciężko mi wejść w podobne klimaty, a jednak Beyond the Grave przyswoiłem sobie bez problemu. Wynika to z pewnością z tego powodu, że zrodziły się we mnie skojarzenia z dawnymi nagraniami bardzo klasycznych zespołów. Może stwierdzenie, że miejscami muzyka na tym materiale niektórymi riffami ociera się o wczesne CRADLE OF FILTH będzie zbyt odważne, ale właśnie takie odnoszę wrażenie. Oczywiście nie mam zamiaru mówić tu, że jest to jakaś kopia, bo muzyka, stworzona przez załogę z BAALBERITH to wypracowany własny styl, jednak z pewnością każdy ma jakieś ulubione płyty, na których się wzoruje, co powoduje kreowanie podobieństw. Riffy gitar są na prawdę ciężkie. Tremolo uderza melodyjnością, a sekcja rytmiczna przygniata z maksymalną siłą do podłoża. Da się wyczuć mnóstwo technicznego, death metalowego grania. Dochodzą tu solówki, które potrafią złapać za gardło i szarpnąć z niewyobrażalną siłą. Bardzo wpadło mi w ucho używanie tappingu, aż sam poczułem w opuszkach palców jakieś napięcie, by złapać gitarę i trochę pobawić się tą techniką. Miejscami gitary przechodzą na czysty kanał, przez co całość brzmi dość oryginalnie. Całkiem dobrze słyszalny bas przybiera na sile podczas zwolnień. Początkowo trochę nie pasowała mi perkusja, ale po drugim przesłuchaniu wpasowała mi się w muzyczną całość. Wspomniane wcześniej klawisze pojawiają się dość często, ale nie są one nachalne, przez co słucha się tego krążka bez cienia znudzenia. Warto wspomnieć też o wokalu, który brzmi nieco jak skrzyżowanie skrzeku z growlingiem, przez co jest wyraźny i zrozumiały. Na płycie zmieściło się pięć utworów o łącznym czasie trwającym ponad dwadzieścia sześć minut. Jakby tak pojawiły się dodatkowo dwa numery więcej, to ten materiał z w powodzeniem mógłby figurować jako album. Podsumowując Beyond the Grave, może i nie postawiłbym jej na szczycie piramidy, płyt, z roku 2020, ale z pewnością jest warta zainteresowania, więc zachęcam do zaopatrzenia się w ten krążek.

The newest release of BAALBERITH has just popped into my player. This band are already old experts in forging black metal, because it was formed in 1999 under the name BLACK DEATH and as far as I know they recorded a demo in 2000, which eventually was not released. The band's current name has been on the roster since 2006 and since then the Nottingham / Newark Lincoln crew has accumulated quite a massive discography. Among these releases we can find four albums, a few demos, splits, ep and one compilation. So there is a lot to choose from. There are four musicians in the lineup, and from what I can see, only Razakel comes from the original lineup. The rest of the members were recruited in 2020. So let's take a listen to their latest ep.
Beyond the Grave starts off with a rather gentle and melodic keyboard introduction, only to be followed after a short while by the weight of the guitars. Music, which was created by BAALBERITH is a surprising combination of black metal, with melodic death metal, and the whole is spiced up with sounds of synthesizers. I must admit that personally it's hard for me to get into similar atmosphere, and yet Beyond the Grave I assimilated without any problem. It's certainly because of the fact that I've got associations with old recordings of very classical bands. Maybe it would be too bold to say that in some places the music on this material is reminiscent of the early CRADLE OF FILTH, but this is exactly my impression. Of course I'm not going to say that it's a copy, because the music created by the crew of BAALBERITH is their own style, but surely everyone has their favorite albums, on which they model themselves, which causes the creation of similarities. Guitar riffs are really heavy. Tremolo strikes with melodiousness and the rhythm section crushes with maximum force to the ground. You can feel a lot of technical, death metal playing. There are also solos which can grab you by the throat and jerk with unimaginable force. I really liked the use of tapping, to the point that I felt some tension in my fingertips to grab the guitar and play with this technique a bit. In places, the guitars switch to a clean channel, which makes the whole sound quite original. The bass, which is quite audible, gets stronger during the slowdowns. At first I didn't like the drums at all, but after the second listening it fitted into the musical whole. The aforementioned keyboards appear quite often, but they are not intrusive, which makes listening to this album without getting bored. It is also worth mentioning the vocal, which sounds a bit like a cross between squawking and growling, which makes it clear and understandable. There are five tracks on the album with a total running time of over twenty-six minutes. If only there were two more tracks, this material could be successfully listed as an album. Summing up Beyond the Grave, maybe I would not rank it at the top of the pyramid of albums of 2020, but it is certainly worth interest, so I encourage you to get this CD-r.
