Pochodzący ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, PESTE UMBRARUM, wydał swój debiut całkiem niedawno w niemieckiej wytwórni Astral Nightmares Productions. Jak się można spodziewać, patrząc na profil wydawniczy Astral Nightmare Productions, mamy tu do czynienia z Black Metalem. Horda swój początek datuje na 2017 rok i do tej pory poza demem z 2018 roku "Night Shines Eternal" opisywany poniżej album jest jedynym wydawnictwem Amerykanów.
Na debiutanckim albumie znalazło się pięć kompozycji, które trafnie wpasowują się w gatunek Black Metalu. Utwory są dość rozbudowane i położono tu całkiem spory nacisk na budowanie atmosfery. Każdy z utworów nie ukazuje nam w pełni swojego oblicza od pierwszych dźwięków, tylko powoli odsłania swój pełen potencjał. Dzieje się tak zarówno w przypadku utworów bardziej nacechowanych gotycką niemal grozą bądź tych bardziej nienawistnych, bardziej nastawionych na silną dynamikę i tempo. Całość dzieje się niczym pod zakurzoną płachtą przykrywającą latami cenne dzieło, a płachta ta powoli się obsuwa w trakcie trwania muzyki. Poza podstawowym instrumentarium znajdziemy tu też klawisze, otwierającą piąty utwór gitarę bez przesteru wprowadzającą świetny klimat, oraz wstawki z filmów. Brzmienie "Night Canticles of the Ancient Ana'themae" jest klarowne, nieco być może za bardzo dopieszczone, ale nie jest też cukierkowe i stoi z dala od main streamowych nagrań. Słucha się tego bardzo dobrze, ale raz bądź drugi przemknęła mi przez głowę myśl o nieco brudniejszym, staro szkolnym brzmieniu. Muzyka od strony aranżacji jest nastawiona na sporą melodyjność partii tremolo, ale PESTE UMBRARUM uderzają też tradycyjnym dwu / trzy strunowym graniem akordami. Nie jest to zapewne w obu przypadkach żadna wirtuozeria, ale taką być nie miała. Pomimo, że riffy są proste i dla fana Black Metalu nie będą stanowić problemu, to jednak bardzo ciekawe są struktury utworów, które nie składają się wyłącznie z ciągłych powtórzeń tych samych fragmentów. Dodatkowo świetne zgranie perkusji, która dynamicznie podkreśla grę gitar, jest na wzorowym poziomie. Nie wychyla się, nie dominuje i prostotą urzeka. Wokalnie mamy tutaj typowy Black Metalowy skrzek, który przechodzi w różne tonacje, nawet w czysty wokal i całość dobrze się sprawdza.
Zapewne sam zespół jak i odbiorcy takiej twórczości nie są nastawieni na łamanie barier gatunkowych i wprowadzanie eksperymentów. I szanuję to w całej rozciągłości. Album jest solidny, wchodzi bez zarzutu i warto go po prostu mieć w swojej kolekcji.

Hailing from the United States, PESTE UMBRARUM, released their debut quite recently on the German label Astral Nightmares Productions. As you might expect, looking at Astral Nightmare Productions' release profile, we're dealing with Black Metal here. Horde got its start in 2017 and so far, apart from the 2018 demo "Night Shines Eternal", the album described below is the Americans' only release.
The debut album features five compositions that aptly fit into the Black Metal genre. The tracks are quite extensive and quite a lot of emphasis has been put on building the atmosphere. Each of the tracks doesn't show us its full face from the first sounds, but slowly reveals its full potential. This happens both in the case of tracks characterized by an almost gothic horror or those more hateful, more focused on the strong dynamics and pace. The whole thing happens as if under a dusty sheet covering a valuable work of art for years, and this sheet slowly slides away during the course of the music. Apart from basic instrumentation, we can also find here keyboards, opening fifth track - a guitar without distortion, which introduces great atmosphere, and interludes from movies. The sound of "Night Canticles of the Ancient Ana'themae" is clear, a bit too polished perhaps, but it's not candy-colored either and it stands far from mainstream recordings. It listens very well, but once or twice the thought of a dirtier, old-school sound crossed my mind. From the arrangement side, the music is geared towards a lot of melodic tremolo parts, but PESTE UMBRARUM also hit with traditional two/three string chord playing. This is probably no virtuosity in either case, but it wasn't meant to be. Although the riffs are simple and won't be a problem for a fan of Black Metal, the structures of the songs are very interesting as they don't consist of constant repetition of the same fragments. In addition, great harmonization of the drums, which dynamically emphasizes the guitar playing, is at an exemplary level. It does not stick out, does not dominate and captivates with its simplicity. Vocally we have here a typical Black Metal screech, which passes into different tones, even into pure vocals and the whole works well.
Probably the band itself as well as the audience of such works are not focused on breaking genre barriers and introducing experiments. And I respect that in its entirety. The album is solid, comes in flawlessly and is simply worth having in your collection.
